Thessaloniki Metro (New Railway Station – Nea Elvetia, Kalamaria extension to Mikra)
Driverless underground metro in twin single-track tunnels, built for the state by Attiko Metro (now Elliniko Metro). The 9.6 km base line with 13 stations runs from the New Railway Station under Egnatia Street to Nea Elvetia, with a depot at Pylaia. Its contract was signed on 7 April 2006 and works began at the end of June 2006; archaeological finds and the financial crisis pushed the opening from a planned October 2012 to 30 November 2024. The 4.78 km Kalamaria extension leaves the base line at the Patrikiou junction east of 25 Martiou and adds five stations (Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini, Mikra). Aktor signed its construction contract on 26 June 2013, work sites opened in 2014, and it opened on 27 August 2026, with Line 2 trains running from the New Railway Station to Mikra over the base-line track as far as 25 Martiou. The system has 18 stations. The EIB lent €650 million for the base line, and both parts were co-funded by EU operational programmes of the 2007–2013 and 2014–2020 periods.

Population is the Municipality of Thessaloniki (Dimos Thessalonikis), 319,045 permanent residents at the 2021 census, reference date 22 October 2021. GDP per capita is for NUTS 3 region EL522 Thessaloniki, the whole regional unit, 1,092,919 people at the same census, rural districts included. The GDP figure is therefore spread over about 3.4 times as many people as the population field counts. Eurostat flags the 2023 value as provisional.
