About
A map of how countries actually build: what got finished, when it was promised, and what it cost.
What is in here
Sections are the unit that matters: a motorway opens in pieces over decades, and an average across the whole road hides that. Every section carries its own dates, cost, contractors and route, and the figures below are counted from those records.
- By type
- Highways 24
- Railways 19
- Bridges 7
- Tunnels 2
Countries covered
Every figure comes from a public source that is cited on the project page. Where a number was never published, the field is left empty rather than filled with a guess, which is why some tables are shorter than you might expect. Routes are drawn from OpenStreetMap.
Counted from the data files when this page was built, on Sep 7, 2026.
How to help
The data is hand-curated, so gaps and mistakes are normal. Three ways to make it better:
- Spot something wrong or missing? Tell me what and where.
- Add a country, a project or a missing cost figure. The data lives as plain JSON files with a cited source on every project. See the repository
- Send it to someone who argues about infrastructure. Most of the interesting corrections come from people who already know the road.
