The project is recorded in Denmark and crosses the Danish-German border. Construction began on the Danish side in 2020 and on the German side in 2021. Sund & Bælt's 17 May 2026 plan is to open road traffic first and rail later, after the German land facilities are ready. A new timetable will follow the first immersion of tunnel elements; no opening date is currently stated. The OSM railway alignment is about 18.42 km, around 2.3% longer than the official approximate 18 km. Femern A/S says the tunnel, portals and ramps contract with Femern Link Contractors took effect on 1 January 2021.
