A4 Maritsa Motorway

A 117 km motorway in southern Bulgaria linking the Trakia motorway (A1) at Orizovo to the Turkish border at Kapitan Andreevo, on Pan-European Corridor IV and European route E80. It opened in phases between October 2010 and October 2015. A 16.66 km Harmanli – Lyubimets section had first opened on 16 May 2007, then closed for repair and reopened with Lyubimets – Svilengrad on 2 October 2010. The last 5 km before the border opened on 14 August 2014. The western sections, Orizovo – Dimitrovgrad and Dimitrovgrad – Harmanli, were co-funded by the EU; the eastern sections were financed nationally, except the border approach (km 114–117), a Ministry of Finance project financed by the World Bank.

Dates, cost and contractor are for API Lot 1 Orizovo – Dimitrovgrad (km 5+000 – 36+400), built 2011–2015. Length corrected from 43 km to 31.4 km, the figure the API Lot 1 page states for km 5+000 – 36+400. The route starts at the road II-66 Chirpan – Popovitsa crossing (km 5+000); the drawn line starts at the Orizovo junction, about 2 km further west, on a stretch built earlier. Contract duration stated as 31 months and 29 calendar days. Пътища Пловдив АД built only the additional slope-stabilisation and drainage works on Lot 1, under a separate contract.

Harmanli – Svilengrad

Contractors are the builders of the Harmanli – Lyubimets section (km 71+011 – 89+100), opened on 16 May 2007, with supervision by Pătinvestinzhenering AD. The builder of the 2010 repair and of Lyubimets – Svilengrad is not named in the sources found. The drawn line runs from km 70+620 to the Generalovo junction, so it also covers km 108+260 – 112, for which no opening date was found.

Opened on 14 August 2014 with a temporary traffic layout; 5.02 km per the API. The drawn line starts at the Generalovo junction, the nearest named junction to km 112, and runs to the border.
