Niš – Dimitrovgrad Railway Modernisation

Modernisation and partial realignment of Serbian mainline 106 from Niš to the Bulgarian border at Dimitrovgrad, the Serbian leg of the Corridor X branch toward Sofia. Under construction with European Investment Bank and EU support. Works started in November 2023 on Staničenje – Pirot. No opening date has been announced; Pirot Plus Online (22 July 2026) reports an end-2027 deadline, Sukovo – Dimitrovgrad (10.2 km) largely built and Dolac – Prosek, through the Sićevo gorge, due to start on 1 September 2026. Sources disagree on the total, with EUR 502 million given as the project cost against EUR 268–276 million quoted for individual subprojects.

The figure is project-wide and includes the Niš railway bypass, which is not drawn in this 96 km lot. The EIB project page gives an earlier EUR 502 million total.

Niš – Dimitrovgrad Pirot Plus Online (22 July 2026) reports a completion deadline of the end of 2027 for the project's four components. This is a press report of a works deadline, not an official opening date. Trace Group Hold leads the consortium building Sićevo – Dimitrovgrad (with Consorzio Armatori Ferroviari and Start Engineering). Ekstra Auto Transport and China Road and Bridge Corporation build the 22 km Niš bypass from Niš-Ranžirna to Sićevo.
