M3 motorway (Budapest – Gödöllő – Hatvan – Füzesabony – Nyíregyháza – Vásárosnamény – Ukrainian border)

The longest motorway in Hungary, from Budapest north-east to Vásárosnamény, with the last section to the Ukrainian border at Beregdaróc still planned (307 km in total per hu.wikipedia, 280 km in operation). It was built in stages: Budapest – Hatvan in 1978–1980, to Gyöngyös in 1983, then after a pause to Füzesabony in 1998, Polgár in 2002, Görbeháza in 2004, Nyíregyháza in 2006–2007 and Vásárosnamény in 2013–2014. The M30 (Miskolc) and M35 (Debrecen) branch off it. Lots follow the opening dates in the hu.wikipedia sections table. Builders and net contract sums are recorded where NIF pages state them, for the lots from Görbeháza onward.

Budapest (Újpest–Rákospalota) – Gödöllő

Km 10+200 to 33+700 per the hu.wikipedia sections table; the first section, opened on 16 October 1978 as far as the Domonyvölgy viaduct; the table labels the end "Gödöllő", while en.wikipedia gives Budapest – Gödöllő as 14 km. The Budapest feeder was completed in stages: one bridge of the flyover over the Körvasút (400 m long, three lanes per direction) opened in 1978 and the flyover was finished in 1980. The inner Budapest part before km 10+200 is not drawn: the M3 in OpenStreetMap starts at the Újpest–Rákospalota junction. The Gödöllő cut is placed by chainage from the Hatvan junction. Drawn length 23.50 km.

Füzesabony – Polgár

Km 114+350 to 174+800 per the hu.wikipedia sections table; the table opens this section at 114+350 and the previous one ends at 113+600, so 0.75 km between them is not allocated to either lot. The table gives 5 December 2002 and the article text only 2002. Origo, 27 November 2002, announces the handover of the 60 km Füzesabony – Polgár section on 5 December in Tiszaújváros. The section includes the 405.5 m Polgár Tisza bridge (en.wikipedia). Drawn length 61.57 km.

Polgár – Görbeháza (M35 junction)

Km 174+800 to 187+800 per the hu.wikipedia sections table (13.0 km). Origo reports it opened on Tuesday 7 September 2004, "close to 13 kilometres", built for 21.2 billion forints in about 21 months (en.wikipedia gives October 2004). The M35 to Debrecen branches off at Görbeháza. Drawn length 11.15 km, 14% under the sourced figure; the sections table and the junction positions in OpenStreetMap differ by about 2 km at this end.

Nyíregyháza bypass (Nyíregyháza-dél – Nagykálló)

Km 226+800 to 234+900 per the hu.wikipedia sections table. The NIF release dated 3 August 2006 says it was handed over that morning (hu.wikipedia text and en.wikipedia give 5 August 2006), a year before the Görbeháza – Nyíregyháza section reached it. The release describes an 8.1 km motorway section with two junctions, a rest-area pair and 17 structures. Its 32.9 billion forint figure covers the whole investment, which also includes the 15.4 km road 403 bypass and works on road 4, so it is not recorded as this lot's cost. Drawn length 7.69 km.

Nagykálló – Őr

Km 234+900 to 268+662 per the hu.wikipedia sections table (33.762 km; the article text says 33.8 km). NIF opened it to traffic provisionally on 16 January 2013; the article records the Ófehértó maintenance depot handover and final traffic approval on 18 June 2013. The NIF project page gives a net contract sum for the works of 34,583,372,826 forints, while the opening release gives a net 31.9 billion forints for the 33.8 km investment, financed 85% by the EU and 15% from domestic funds; the two figures are not reconciled and neither is recorded as a cost. The M49 to Csenger branches off at Őr. Drawn length 32.89 km.

Őr – Vásárosnamény

Km 268+662 to 280+562 per the hu.wikipedia sections table (11.9 km), opened on 10 October 2014, a month ahead of the deadline per NIF. The NIF project page gives a net contract sum of 15,498,989,989 forints; the opening release says net 15.4 billion forints, built in 350 working days with 85% EU and 15% state funding. The section ends at an at-grade junction with road 41. The Őr cut is placed 11.9 km back from the end of the mapped motorway, as OpenStreetMap has no junction node at Őr, so the drawn length equals the sourced length by construction.

Vásárosnamény – Beregdaróc (Ukrainian border)

Last missing section, a new alignment from the M3–M34 junction at Vásárosnamény to Beregdaróc on the Ukrainian border, with a new Tisza bridge (about 210 m span), a border crossing, four grade-separated junctions and 29 structures in all. The NIF project page (18 January 2018) gives 22,635 m ("about 23 km"), phase "preparation", with a feasibility study, an environmental permit and a permit design, financed by the Hungarian state. Magyar Építők gives 23 km in 2020 and about 25 km in 2017. The total M3 length of 307 km with 280 km in operation (hu.wikipedia) leaves 27 km, about 4 km more than the NIF section, which suggests that stretch lies between the end of the built motorway and the M3–M34 junction. On 22 September 2020 NIF announced the winner of the design tender for the permit design (Főmterv, Utiber and Constreal consortium). In March 2024 the chief executive of MKIF said the M3 will also reach the border in its ten-year road programme, with no date for this section. No construction contract or date was found. The drawn line follows the OpenStreetMap highway=proposed ways, which run 31.42 km from the end of the built motorway to a point near Beregdaróc, well over the sourced length, so the drawn line is indicative only. The 2020 design contract value is not stated in the page read.
