A1 Bucharest–Nădlac Motorway

Romania's first motorway, built 1967–1972 and financed from the state budget; fully rehabilitated later (a 1997 FAT consortium contract for €27M over 22 months)

First stage, about 15 km from Bascov (Pitești) to the Merișani junction, opened in December 2024, eight months ahead of the contractual term. The remaining 15 km or so to Curtea de Argeș opened in June 2025.

Includes the Momaia tunnel (about 1.35 km), the first bored motorway tunnel in Romania. Works were at 99% in September 2026 and opening depends on the tunnel safety tests with ISU, planned for the end of September. CNAIR expects traffic by the end of 2026; the contract deadline is February 2027. HotNews gives March 2022 as the start of the contract (design came first) and autumn 2023 for the start of works.

Lots 2 and 3 (Tigveni – Boița), the Carpathian crossing, under separate execution contracts: lot 2 Mapa–Cengiz (Boița – Cornetu, 31.33 km), lot 3 Webuild (Cornetu – Tigveni, 37.4 km). Staged completion per OpenStreetMap construction tagging: lot 3 (Tunel Poiana, Polanta) 2028, lot 2 Boița–Cornet (Tunel Lazaret 1/2, Robești, Câineni, Boița 1/2, Balota) 2031, so the full stretch is in service only from 2031. Section 4, Tigveni – Curtea de Argeș, is recorded as its own lot.

Orăștie–Sibiu received close to €370M in EU funds for the whole section (four lots: Strabag, Straco Grup–Studio Corona, Salini Impregilo, Astaldi); lot 3 was closed for repairs 2015–2016

The part of Lugoj–Deva lot 2 opened on 6 March 2017, bypassing Făget as far as Margina. The rest of the lot, east of Margina, was re-contracted in 2022 and is recorded separately as Margina – Holdea

The last gap in the A1 between Boița and Nădlac. The contract covers just over 13 km: the 4.03 km of Section D left unfinished east of Margina and the 9.13 km of Section E with the twin-bore bear tunnels, 2.13 km in total (DRDP Timișoara figures, January 2023). CNAIR and most reports quote only the 9.13 km. The start order for design was issued on 5 December 2022; tunnel excavation began at the start of 2025 and both bores of Tunnel 2 (1,985 m and 1,825 m) were through by 18 September 2026, with physical progress past 75%. CNAIR's director general expects traffic in the first half of 2027

Nădlac–Arad tendered together with Timișoara–Lugoj and Lugoj–Dumbrava; lot 1 and part of lot 2 opened December 2014, the remainder plus the junction with the Hungarian M43 in July 2015
