A3 Transylvania Motorway (Brașov–Cluj–Borș)

First Romanian motorway completed in 2020: opened 4 September 2020, connecting directly to the Hungarian motorway network

Section of the Transylvania motorway re-tendered with EU financing after the 2013 Bechtel termination. The contract was signed on Saturday 5 September 2020 (HotNews, the same day, citing CNAIR); later reports give 30 September 2020.

Last major gap of the Transylvania motorway, including the Meseș tunnel, Romania's longest road tunnel when complete. The design-and-build contract was signed on 10 April 2025 with Makyol – Ozaltin for 78 months (18 design, 60 execution). It covers 41 km in two parts, Poarta Sălajului – Zalău (15.14 km, with the Meseș tunnel) and Zalău – Nușfalău (25.86 km); ro.wikipedia gives 31 km. Contracted with Spedition UMB in July 2020 for 12 months of design and 24 of execution, with the start order on 31 May 2021. Opened at 16:00 on 11 August 2026 between the Zimbor and Românași junctions, the first motorway opening of 2026 in Romania

An earlier contract for Nădășelu–Mihăiești alone (16.85 km) was concluded in May 2016 for €100M with an 18-month term; design was delayed because the feasibility study proved inadequate. The current contract, for Nădășelu–Mihăiești and Mihăiești–Zimbor, was awarded to Spedition UMB – Tehnostrade – Electromontaj on 22 September 2020; Pro Infrastructura says it was signed in December 2020. OpenStreetMap tags opening_date=2026 on subsection 3B1 (Mihăiești–Zimbor) and the Nădășelu route deviation. Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said traffic should run without restrictions on the 40-plus km between Cluj and Zalău from 1 December 2026; the Ozaltin contract for the Nădășelu and Topa Mică route deviations has an updated contract deadline of 1 February 2027. CNAIR's January 2026 status sheet gives the revised contract value as 1,495.907 million lei excluding VAT after addenda; it does not date the price revision. The same CNAIR table lists 25 January 2021 as the start date for the combined Nadaselu-Mihaiesti and Mihaiesti-Zimbor package.

Opened on 28 September 2018, once CNAIR accepted the 320 m bridge over the Someșul Mic at Gilău. Bechtel had left the bridge unfinished; Tirrena Scavi completed it under a contract of about 26 million lei signed in September 2017. The 8.7 km Spedition UMB – Tehnostrade motorway lot beyond it, contracted in April 2013 and started in August 2014, was accepted in November 2017. CNAIR gives the opened section as over 9.6 km; en.wikipedia gives 9.5 km.

First 42 km of the Transylvania motorway, opened 1 December 2009; built under the 2003 Bechtel design-build-finance contract, whose ground-breaking was held at Chinteni (Cluj) on 16 June 2004. Bechtel delivered 52 of the contracted kilometres before termination in 2013

Final section delivered by Bechtel on the Câmpia Turzii – Gilău motorway, inaugurated 13 November 2010. Romanian Wikipedia gives it as 10 km, which with the 42 km Gilău – Turda section makes up the 51.8 km Câmpia Turzii – Gilău total.

Ogra – Câmpia Turzii lot 3. The first contract, with Straco Grup – Specialist Consulting – Total Road for 279.7 million lei excluding VAT, was terminated in March 2021; ro.wikipedia names Strabag – Wilhelm Geiger as the builder that finished it. Works were completed on 15 December 2023 and traffic opened on 21 December. Wikipedia gives 15.7 km (en) and 15.69 km (ro).

Ogra – Câmpia Turzii lot 2. Design-and-build contract signed on 6 April 2016 for 379.7 million lei excluding VAT (Wikipedia); HotNews gives 437.63 million lei excluding VAT for the contract signed that day. Works start order in May 2016, but physical works waited for building permits into 2017. Opened on 18 September 2020.

Two design-and-build lots: Ungheni – Ogra (10.1 km, Strabag – Straco, 251.3 million lei excluding VAT) and Ogra – Iernut (3.6 km, Geiger, 55.8 million lei excluding VAT, signed on 16 February 2015). Opened on 12 December 2018 with a temporary roundabout at the old DN14A, because the Iernut junction lay on the unfinished Chețani – Iernut lot. The Câmpia Turzii – Târgu Mureș section was previously recorded as one 57 km lot opened in 2018; Wikipedia gives its four parts as 15.69, 17.9, 13.7 and 4.5 km (51.8 km).

Târgu Mureș – Ogra lot 1: 4.5 km of motorway and a 4.7 km link road. The first contract (Lemacons – Vega 93 – Arcada, 179.8 million lei excluding VAT) was terminated in April 2016. Opened on 6 December 2021.
