Tunnels

Romanian railway tunnels

Romania's notable railway tunnels. The Teliu tunnel, bored between 1924 and 1929 on the Brașov–Întorsura Buzăului line and opened in 1931, has been the country's longest railway tunnel for almost a century at 4,369.5 m. The Corridor IV upgrade between Brașov and Sighișoara will overtake it: four tunnel boring machines are driving the twin-bore Ormeniș (about 6.7 km) and Homorod (about 5.2 km) tunnels through the hills around Racoș, replacing the winding Olt valley alignment, and shorter new tunnels are being built at Mureni and Achita on the Cața–Sighișoara subsection. Lengths here are measured from OpenStreetMap geometry of a single bore.

Teliu tunnel (Brașov – Întorsura Buzăului line)

Driven from the north from 15 July 1924 and from the south from 5 July 1925; the two headings met on 1 October 1926, the tunnel was completed on 30 September 1928 and opened to traffic on 25 June 1931. Built for double track and electrification, it is still single-track and unelectrified; it remains Romania's longest railway tunnel
